Blog Post 8: Turmeric. Keep it fresh for supreme detox, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric needs to be of a supreme quality. So many people have said to me that they have tried turmeric as a detox or anti-inflammatory but “it didn’t work” or they didn’t notice much difference.
Well that certainly can be the case. Here’s why…
Turmeric contains natural oils which will become rancid quite quickly, meaning if the product is not consumed in a fresh state it will simply be a dead food. Void of nutrients. It will be useless as a health enhancer.
If consuming the root, make sure it is fresh. If it has been imported, we won’t know how long it has travelled for or how long it has been stored. So In some cases, it may already be too old by the time you buy it.
If it is potent, it will have premier DETOX properties. See this CASE STUDY.
So what’s the answer?
- Smell it! The aroma should be fresh, spicy and pungent.
- Grow it yourself! The Royal Horticulture Society is one place that has tips on how to do so in the UK. You want to ensure you use seeds that are of high quality.
- Buying in capsule form is often the answer, BUT the turmeric should be encapsulated immediately after harvest. But how would you know? Open the capsule and smell it, taste it. Check the label, look for vegetarian cellulose capsules, not gelatin, which have usually been heated. Premier research labs (PRL) based in America is a company that I trust because when you open a capsule you can smell the richness and the freshness. Cytoplan is a company here in England that I also trust and recommend.**
There are other companies too that have good products, just make sure you do your research.
Turmeric nourishes the gastrointestinal tract and supports liver health. It contains specific compounds known as curcuminoids, making it a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.
Cell-Active Curcumin Plus is a product made by Cytoplan and “contains curcumin from turmeric and gingerols from ginger root. It also contains Longvida® Optimised Curcumin which renders the curcumin highly permeable, soluble and stable. Scientifically proven to be up to 285 times more bioavailable than standard 95% curcumin.” (Cytoplan.co.uk) Check the product below.
SO there you have it. Fresh, vibrant turmeric is a pungent spice that is beautiful to use in cooking to add warmth and depth to your dishes. And it will offer vital anti-inflammatory properties when you pick QUALITY sources.
** If you take any prescription medications PLEASE check with your doctor before taking turmeric. Do not use turmeric if you have gallstones or a bile duct obstruction. Turmeric is also a blood thinner, so if you are on blood thinners, turmeric would be a contraindication as it could actually slow blood clotting. Know that it could increase the risk of bruising and bleeding in people with bleeding disorders.
