The science behind it:

When we measure our pH properly we can monitor the overall health of our various organs, glands and tissues. We don’t need to have blood work done every time we want to check though. A simple test with litmus or pH paper can tell us.

Blood ph is around 7.365.

OPTIMUM Saliva pH: 6-2 7.6

OPTIMUM Urine: 6.4 -7.00

Being too acidic(below 6.0) can mean we are more open to infections. Inflammation which loves an acidic environment is a pre-cursor to disease. We also do not want to be too alkaline either, which can lead to alkalosis, which is problematic for the kidneys and other systems in the body.

when your body is in balance, the minerals are naturally moved from blood to bones and the excess excreted out of the body.

Blog Post 8: Turmeric. Keep it fresh for supreme detox, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric needs to be of a supreme quality. So many people have said to me that they have tried turmeric as a detox or anti-inflammatory but “it didn’t work” or they didn’t notice much difference.

Well that certainly can be the case. Here’s why…

Turmeric contains natural oils which will become rancid quite quickly, meaning if the product is not consumed in a fresh state it will simply be a dead food. Void of nutrients.  It will be useless as a health enhancer.

If consuming the root, make sure it is fresh. If it has been imported, we won’t know how long it has travelled for or how long it has been stored. So In some cases, it may already be too old by the time you buy it.

So what’s the answer?

  1. Smell it! The aroma should be fresh, spicy and pungent. 
  2. Grow it yourself! The Royal Horticulture Society is one place that has tips on how to do so in the UK. You want to ensure you use seeds that are of high quality.
  3. Buying in capsule form is often the answer, BUT the turmeric should be encapsulated immediately after harvest. But how would you know?  Open the capsule and smell it, taste it. Check the label, look for vegetarian cellulose capsules, not gelatin, which have usually been heated. BLOG POST 6: Skin: Psoriasis, Eczema, Hives, Acne: What you must do to resolve these health conditions to reveal CLEAR, SMOOTH skin.

MYTH: Skin conditions can only be fixed with topical creams, steroids, or prescriptions. 

THE TRUTH: These are all usually secondary conditions to a systemic problem.  

Which means they are symptoms of an underlying cause. Find the cause, resolve it and that is when the symptoms can truly be reversed.  Simply said, adopt the TRIPLE F method: 

Find it. Fix it. Forget about it.

Why do some people have asthma, and others don’t? Are we born with the issue or do we contact it later in life?

And why are skin conditions such as eczema, hives, psoriasis or acne so problematic and distressing for some people, yet others have clear healthy skin all their lives?

These are all questions that are a constant source of confusion and frustration for many people.

SKIN issues are health conditions with usually more than one root cause…

  1. There could be a detox elimination problem. This can occur when the body has a hard time clearing out toxins, including chemicals and pesticides in our food, water and even the air. The liver is the major player cleaning waste from the blood. And when it simply can’t keep up with the onslaught, it can dump toxins in other areas… sinuses being one place, the skin being a favourite

Blog Post 5- Food Allergies, what you NEED to know and the FIVE things YOU can do to change your life

MYTH: When suffering with FOOD ALLERGIES you will FOREVER AND ALWAYS need to avoid the allergen in question.

THE TRUTH:  Allergies are a secondary condition to a systemic issue. Find the root causes, get to work on addressing them and watch the beauty of the body’s healing mechanisms spring into action!

Food allergies are not to be taken lightly as allergic reactions can be deadly. With peanut allergies doubling over the last two decades(1) it is crucial that we have more resources available to address this “21st century epidemic.” (1)

Coeliac/celiac disease is a serious condition whereby your immune system struggles and attacks your own tissues when you eat gluten. It causes inflammation in the gut and can prevent you from absorbing nutrients. Symptoms include bloating, pain and diarrhoea/diarrhea. People with coeliac disease need to be on a gluten-free diet until they have utilised the resources to reverse the disease.***

Foods that contain the protein gluten include:

SO as you can see, there is much that can be done towards reversing allergies IF we understand the underlying causes surrounding them. MYTH: Seasonal allergies such as hay fever, as well as sinus problems  and asthma can only be managed with anti-histamines, inhalers and prescriptions.

The Truth: If you want to merely band-aid the symptoms then the above might do that. But if you want to ERADICATE, ELIMINATE and REVERSE the problem then READ ON.

Here are some facts on Hay fever as reported by Cytoplan:

Our job as nutritionists is to educate people on how to take care of themselves… that might be on which foods to eat, and what to avoid, how to deal with and reduce the stress we often choose to ignore or bury deep inside. 

In Western medicine doctors look at the body as being purely physical and may treat symptoms and disease with the two main tools at their disposal – surgery and drugs. For any acute conditions, those modalities are often absolutely necessary and life-saving. And for those reasons conventional medicine is indispensable and second to none.

But the problem is, many of the daily health issues we deal with aren’t acute, they are chronic; building up slowly over time. Examples being sleep issues, energy levels, headaches, digestive issues such as bloating or constipation, allergies, rashes, diabetes, arthritis, inflammation, hormonal disruptors, stress, mood, depression… the list goes on.  And honestly, there isn’t a pill out there that alone will solve a chronic issue.

Why is that?

Drugs often band aid symptoms, and occasionally that is exactly what we need. If you have an important event to attend, or you just need to get through the day, but have a nasty bout of hay fever or a debilitating migraine, then implementing a quick fix will bring much needed relief.

But if the same problem keeps rearing its ugly head, a plan of action is what you need. And we have just that! Hunt for the root causes and eliminate them for good!

We know it is important it to eat a healthy diet, exercise and hydrate, all part of a healthy lifestyle.

Stress can diminish everything good that you do. This is so important to grasp, because your worries, fears, insecurities, anxiety and any negative emotions –  if ignored or worse – buried, will weaken your resolve and your immune system.  Stress can damage your cells, blocking your body’s ability to absorb the ‘good stuff,’ to function properly and to heal.

There’s no point eating an antioxidant rich meal, taking a bunch of supplements, but then getting stressed out at work, taking care of the family by yourself and slumping exhausted into bed before starting all over again the next morning. If this is the case a plan of action is most definitely needed.

BLOG POST 2-Myth Busters: Indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux

MYTH:  Indigestion, Heartburn or acid reflux is caused by too much acid in the gut.

THE TRUTH:  It is actually an acid deficiency – specifically HCL – hydrochloric acid. That’s right. Hard to absorb? (no pun intended) The True reason behind that uncomfortable, painful, burning sensation you have been experiencing is that the body should be producing hydrochloric acid, and lots of it, make no mistake…    

Lactic acid is a by-product or waste product produced either by muscles working hard – OR – and in this case –  by fermenting rotting food. So when you reach for that anti-acid remedy…  it does one thing… it kills the lactic acid. Yay! (hence anti-acid.) But it also kills HCL. And that’s a disaster waiting to happen.

If the pain or discomfort temporarily goes away, BUT keeps coming back, that’s when you know you’re not really addressing the issue.

So what stops or slows down HCL production then if it so important?                                                                            

a) Aging. (once we hit 30 most of us start to produce less of this acid.)

b) Stress – how much and how we deal with it can deplete our HCL reserves

The result is: we simply can’t fully digest food, and wait for it…

Rotting food that sits around in our gut causes lactic acid

The TRUTH is…Fix the root cause and the symptoms will disappear.

Ok so that’s important to know.  But why is HCL so crucial for YOU?

FACT: It breaks proteins down into the essential amino acids needed for smooth digestion.

How does knowing this help YOU?

Ever heard of or suffered from digestive issues such as:

  • Leaky gut
  • IBS
  • Diverticulitus
  • Gastroenteritis

Well, these conditions can all stem from the SAME root problem. Protein molecules are large and NEED to be converted (in the stomach) into amino acids which are smaller and perfect to digest. It’s as simple as that. Left undigested in the stomach, these large molecules will enter the colon and can cause havoc. Because they cannot be broken down here, they will “leak” into the blood stream, and are seen by the body as ‘foreign.’ So… you must have enough HCL in your stomach to break down the -protein molecules into amino acids.

FACT: It’s a spring cleaning system for your gut, killing bacteria that enters the stomach, before the food moves down through the body into the intestines.

FACT: It’s a co-factor for mineral absorption. Sometimes the question isn’t “are we ingesting enough minerals,” but rather – “are we absorbing them?”

So HOW do we increase hydrochloric acid in the tummy? *

You can start by increasing your acid reserves gently and naturally…

Upon rising and on an empty tummy drink a glass of room temperature water with a large squirt of real lemon juice. Or… start with a shot of organic, raw, ACV (apple cider vinegar.)

You may need more support if for example you are experiencing bloating, especially if you are eating a lot of cooked food, you may find it beneficial to take some digestive enzymes which have a small amount of HCL in them.*

  • Digestive health – Take digestive enzymes when eating cooked food as the enzymes are impaired or destroyed by heat. People who incorporate a lot of raw fruits and vegetables into their diets are keeping those invaluable digestive enzymes intact.

In some instances, you may find you need pure HCL/betaine pepsin. But always check with a health provider first. *
